Rules for Riding
Riders have responsibilities, too. The following rules are enforced by TriMet personnel and carry a penalty up to $250 and/or exclusion from the transit system:
Pay your fare.
Valid and correct fare is required.
Be ready to show your phone, credit card, Hop card or ticket as proof of fare if asked. If you’re using an Honored Citizen or Youth fare, be prepared to show proof of eligibility. Without valid fare, you could be fined up to $250 or excluded from the system.
Make way.
Don’t block the aisles or doors.
Large items and objects, including bags of cans and bottles that block doors and aisles, leak or smell are not allowed on board.
If you have a bag or bike, make sure it’s not blocking the aisle or doorway. If you’re standing, move back so others can board. Note that large and double-wide strollers are not practical for use on TriMet. Learn more about bringing a stroller on board.
No smoking.
Smoking of any kind is prohibited on board buses and trains, as well as on all TriMet property including shelters. If you smoke, be considerate of your fellow riders by moving away from the shelter or station.
Take a stand.
Move for seniors and people with disabilities.
In the priority seating area by the door, you are required to move for seniors and people with disabilities. They need that seat more than you do! (It’s okay to use this area as long as it is not occupied or needed.)
Safety first.
Don’t threaten or intimidate riders or operators.
It’s unlawful to threaten the safety of a rider or operator, or interfere with the movement of a bus or train.
Do not disturb.
Don’t be so loud that you disturb others.
Everyone deserves a comfortable ride. Excessive noise is not allowed on TriMet.
Pet boarding?
If you bring a pet, keep it in a closed carrier.
Unless it’s a service animal, your pet must be kept in a carrier.
Lunchtime?
Keep food and drinks in closed containers.
Eating is not allowed on TriMet vehicles, but you can bring food and drinks on board in closed containers.
